How hail affects metal differently than shingle

On asphalt shingle, hail strips protective granules off the surface, exposing the asphalt mat underneath to UV — damage that’s easy to miss from the ground because the shingle can still look mostly intact. On metal, hail dents the panel directly, which is more visually obvious but generally less functionally consequential: a dent doesn’t expose an underlying material to weather the way granule loss does.

Is denting a real problem, or just cosmetic?

Most hail denting on a properly spec’d panel is cosmetic — it doesn’t compromise the panel’s ability to shed water or protect the structure underneath. The exceptions worth taking seriously: denting severe enough to crack or split the panel’s protective coating (opening a path for corrosion), denting at a seam or fastener point that compromises the seal, or denting on a lower-gauge budget panel severe enough to affect its structural integrity.

What to check after a hailstorm

• Panel surfaces for new dents, especially on south- and west-facing slopes that catch more storm exposure
• Seams and fastener points for any separation or visible gaps
• Gutters and downspouts for accumulated debris that might indicate impact activity
• Flashing at chimneys, vents, and valleys for displacement
